Correctional Officers Are Killing Themselves

The suicide rate among correctional officers is significantly higher than other occupations and twice as high as police officers. Yet, the topic of suicide and the stressors contributing to suicide are rarely discussed. AMU professor Michael Pittaro recently presented to correctional representatives from 14 southern states about suicide awareness and the need for a change in leadership style.

Law Enforcement and Substance Use: A Dangerous Mix

Substance abuse can affect anyone, even law enforcement. Although police officers often see the severe consequences of drug or alcohol use through their jobs, some still turn to substances. There are many reasons law enforcement personnel use substances including coping with the stress of their job, regular exposure to tragedies or death, issues in their personal life, or simply from anxiety or depression.
