October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. For those who work in public safety, cyber security is an especially important topic of interest. For example, keeping personal information private is a critical issue for police officers. To help educate officers about minimizing the exposure of private information online, AMU has been conducting a series of webinars on doxing. Among the recommendations is to remove personal identifying information from public databases.
The Department of Homeland Security offers these tips to the help secure online information:
- Set strong passwords and don’t share them with anyone.
- Keep your operating system, browser, and other critical software optimized by installing updates.
- Maintain an open dialogue with your family, friends, and community about Internet safety.
- Limit the amount of personal information you post online and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information widely.
- Be cautious about what you receive or read online—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Throughout the month of October, In Public Safety will be posting articles about cybersecurity written by faculty members and staff members. Below is a list of articles for easy reference.
