Student Spotlight: Police Chief Rex Marks

American Military University is proud to spotlight a remarkable law enforcement professional who has excelled in both his academic and professional career.

Chief Rex Marks brings more than 27 years of experience to the City of Lincoln, Calif., where he has served as Police Chief since September 2013. Prior to coming to Lincoln, Chief Marks served as captain for the City of Grass Valley, Calif., (2007-2013) and Chief of Police for the City of Hopewell, Va., (2004-2006) following a rapid progression from police officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and finally captain for the City of Grand Rapids, Mich.,(1992-2004). Chief Marks began his career with the City of Portage, Mich., (1985-1992) where he worked as a volunteer, undercover agent, and reserve police officer before securing a full-time paid position with the agency.

His Academic Achievements
Rex Marks_CPCAChief Marks has been just as ambitious with his academic career as he has his professional career. Despite starting his academic aspirations a little later in his career, Chief Marks has been highly motivated to enhance his career path through education.

In just five years, he successfully completed two bachelor’s degrees, two master’s degrees and has nearly completed a doctoral degree in public policy.

Chief Marks earned one of his master’s degrees in public administration with a concentration on disaster management from AMU. He completed this degree in just 11 months and, at one point, his two master’s programs overlapped.

There are several reasons he picked AMU for one of his master’s degree programs:

  • The convenience of online education with accessibility to the courses he most desired
  • Cost-effective and fast-paced
  • The flexibility to pick the courses he wanted and to take them in the order that worked best for him
  • A diverse group of instructors with networking opportunities
  • Worked well within his work and family schedule

Balancing Personal Life
Chief Marks is married with four children. His educational path has afforded him the opportunity to be an education role model for his children. They do homework as a family and often have a little collegiate competition going on among them. Chief Marks has told all four of his kids that they must have at least a bachelor’s degree. As a result of the scholastic focus in his home, one his sons is about to be hired as a police officer in San Diego; another one is going to join the U.S, Coast Guard to become a Sea Marshall in anticipation of a future law enforcement career; his daughter is looking forward to a career in the medical profession; and he has one son who is a junior in high school.

American Military University recognizes and appreciates the determination and accomplishments of Chief Marks. He is truly an inspiration for other public safety professionals to follow and has demonstrated his commitment to promoting the benefits of on-going education.
